Antique majolica plate circa 1818-1850. This plate is marked only with the impressed size number of "7'.
The same plate in blue in photo 9 is well marked with the early impressed "U&C/S". I have found that makers mark in my book of Sarreguemines marks. It states that this mark was used by the manufacture of the Schramberg majolica factory in Germany that was founded in 1818 by Isidor Faist. This mark was used on majolica close to the third part of the 19th century around 1840-1845.
I have also found the same larger plate in my Villeroy & Boch book which shows this being manufactured between 1840-1845. Email me if you would like photos.
This beautiful antique majolica plate features art nouveau motifs with an ornate rim of leaves on a basket weave pattern. The center goes from a swirling pattern to a lined pattern into a large central medallion. It has a high gloss and deep rich colors! Just beautiful.
It measures 7.75 inches in diameter.
It is in excellent condition for its great age with no chips, the front is beautiful as you can see from all the close-up photos. It has one small nibble on the back rim, see photo 8 which was made when they took the plate off of the stilt in the kiln and 2 other stilt marks on the back from being fired in the kiln. All normal for antique majolica this age, 170 years old!!
We are pleased to be able to offer others in this pattern. They are available in our eCRATER store for your collecting enjoyment!
